Snake in the Grass

As I cautiously approached the robins nest (in the post below) I nearly stepped on the head of this snake! I caught it out of the corner of my eye and did a two-step, missing it by inches.
We had a stare-down, both wondering if the other were scared or dangerous.
In time, the snake got a hold of its instinct and posed its most threatening pose.
But it didn’t slither away I think because it had just eaten something. See in the image above the distict bulge in the body of the snake, not quite half way between head and tail.
