Hibernation Begins

As last week came to an end, so did the brilliant colors of fall. The picture above shows that last burst of glorious yellow that lags behind the height of the season’s display. I think it’s a sugar maple that presents this invigorating glow.

But fall’s moodiness hung in the air soon after, as a dense cloud overhang blocked the sun and held a heavy atmosphere over the pond.

This week the re-seeding for the spring is evident in many of the plants.

Today, the Mallard pair brightened the scene. The reflection of his colors joined those of pines and shore scrub on the water the pair paddled through. (Enlarge this photo, by clicking on it, for full appreciation. Use your back arrow to return to the post.)

This year the pond has been graced with the presence of Canada Geese from early spring until now. Posts from last May show a new generation of these waterbirds, which start their life as little, yellow, fluffy things. While their droppings can be unseemly, I find it tolerable for the joy of their presence. They have a mellow disposition. This trio enjoyed a lazy float around the pond this afternoon.

In the past week, we’ve had both the chill of winter (including a sparkling frost that gathered through the night) and a spring-like day (today) when no layering was necessary! The mix of the seasons churns the air as the pond moves closer to its winter sleep.

  1. It was quite a walk yesterday – it went from a wonderful high to a sad low in 30 minutes or so. But isn\’t that just like nature – unpredictable, harsh, mysterious? Thanks for visiting and for your comment – Mary
